That’s life! Well, I’m sure you’re aware of them already, but don’t miss their Pommes Frites. Possibly the best in the world.

Alright, here’s an idea that should very likely work: – Clone your system drive to any external drive. Could basically be anything sufficiently large, so any cheap spinning HDD will do. I can’t see why that wouldn’t work. It’s just a few hours of downtime the Apple servers are sometimes painfully slow and cloning drives will take some time, too.

Thanks Sascha, Much obliged! Not only Apple servers are slow but connexions on the island are too! So this too will have to wait until I come back early February. Anybody who read my Logic book knows how the sound library download works which I describe in detail, including the location of the hidden dmg files that you can capture. That means, it first stores the installer file locally even if you have relocated to an external location.

Also guys one more thing that I did, before doing all the above. I downloaded some of the content, only couple of GB’s worth.

This was installed directly onto the system hard drive. Once here it asks you what Hard Drive you would like to move the already installed audio to. So you just basically click your external HD, and it moves it over.

Logic states in the manual that you only have to do this once with any amount of downloaded audio content, and whenever anymore is downloaded it will automatically install it to that location, on your external HD. You can try just doing this without setting up an alias folder and see if that works for you, but I just did them both, then started the huge download and it worked!

So im not sure if you need to both or just one of them. Good luck. Thanks Alexandra! Top Mentioned Manufacturers. Facebook Twitter Reddit LinkedIn. Subscribe to our mailing lists. Just don’t press the ‘Reset’ option unless you want to reset where logic is looking for its Library back to the default location.

It worked for me as well, I have access to my Library, but funny enough, when I go to the Library Manager, it still thinks that I need to download all my libraries and mark them all as “not installed”!!?? My Logic is in French so I don’t know exactly how it is flagged in English “not installed” or “not downloaded”, but you see my point!

So did you manage to make it see that the libraries were installed or you see the same behaviour in Library Manager?? I just checked on my laptop that had only downloaded the “Essential sound and instruments”. In the Library Manager it still shows that only that portion is installed. Yet the entire content is working on this laptop. This laptop possibly never stored “receipts”, acknowledging that it had downloaded the packages. Someone could try the test below to see what happens.

I’m chicken to try it because everything is working so well on both macs. Pure conjecture this. Anyone volunteer to test or even remember where apple puts these “receipts”? I would test, but I have slow internet here. On all other computers you have set up to share this drive, ignore their Library Managers.

Well I tried your suggestion, and unfortunately, for me it re-downloaded the whole 17GIG of sounds!!!

I wonder which plist file of my old installation contains the “receipts So i tried following the steps you provided but now when i try to relocate the sound library the drive i want the sound library on is greyed out and it says “sound library files exist here”. Make sure you follow the entire 1 step here: viewtopic.

Your manager shouldn’t see any existing sound library files after you’ve successfully accomplished 1. It’s a huge oversight especially if you’ve got multiple people working at the same location, all using Logic, and they ALL need their own individual sound libraries — what a colossal waste of storage space.

Honestly, they should just move the whole thing to iCloud. I don’t see any downsides to that unless you’re air gapped. It would probably save Apple bandwidth in the long run, people wouldn’t need to download stuff over and over again and they would only download what they actually need to use at any given time.

I wanted to do something similar and for me the easiest and most flexible way is just using symlynks…. With this method you can chose what to move where and actually have a library spanning multiple HDs if you want. Many thanks to helment for the excellent workaround.

Does anyone know if this will work for the essential sounds? Is there a way I can copy them to the new partition without downloading them again?

Thanks jackoverfull. I’m not sure which sounds exactly that Logic considers ‘essential’. Do they reside in a particular folder? You can post now and register later. If you’re installing Logic Pro for the first time and you want to use an external drive for the Sound Library, first download the Essential Content to the system drive of your Mac. Then move the content to the external drive. When you download additional Sound Library content , Logic Pro automatically downloads it to the external drive. Make sure to click Allow when Logic Pro asks for permission to access an external drive.

You can’t share a Sound Library between Mac computers. Don’t rename the external drive after you’ve moved your library. If you get an error that says content can’t be relocated, give Logic Pro access to your external drive. After you’ve moved the Sound Library to an external drive, you might want to move it back to your Mac.

For example, you might have a performance and you don’t want to bring an external drive. To install all content, click Select All Uninstalled, then click Install. If you open Logic Pro or MainStage without the external drive containing the Sound Library, you can choose what you want to do.

Moving logic pro x samples to external hard drive free –

I re-located my sound library from my laptops disc to an external hard drive. That was smooth and seamless and i used Logic that way for a while.

I want to “point” Logic to the new location on my external hard drive so that I don’t have to download everything all over again but I’m unable to figure out how to do that. I did re-download the essentials so that I could continue working on a project and I moved that to my ext. But as soon as I move that folder somewhere new in the ext.

I’ve been able to move the sound library folder in the past without it being affected so there must be something I’m not understanding. My new Logic Pro Book is out! Also, don’t rename the drive once you relocated the library. Another reason for Logic to not find it. Yes, exactly, that’s how it should be done. Otherwise Logic has no way to tell where the folder is. That’s unfortunate and seems like an oversight by the LPX developers. I feel like there should be a hack Then move it to a different folder than where you want the final library to live.

This is important – don’t forget this step. You don’t want logic to know about your old library files just yet. It has to think you are starting over from scratch. When it gives you the stink about wanting to download the library files all over again – uncheck all of the library parts except for the Reverb Presets.

I found that this was the smallest single piece of the library you can install where Logic will leave you the hell alone. It was about a 1gb download. So I downloaded just that and let it install to the default library location. Tell it to move whatever was just installed to wherever you want your final library to live Otherwise the next couple steps won’t work.

When it asks you to replace, simply replace it; overwriting anything that was there before. Voila – your original sound library is intact in the place you want it where it was before and upon opening Logic, all sounds and instruments are properly detected.

So simple. Thanks for sharing! Like all good thinking, it sounds very simple once someone has thought of it first. Thanks a lot for sharing. Thanks Helment, Just tried your solution above and it works!

That might possibly be the best first post ever here! Should the solution above become a “Sticky”? You will get a ” Library could not be found” message with 3 options. Just don’t press the ‘Reset’ option unless you want to reset where logic is looking for its Library back to the default location. Why on earth didn’t Apple just let us decide where we want all files located? This is crazy for such a sophisticated DAW.

Yes, hard to understand the “motivation”, if any. I must say when I had to abandon Logic I switched to Ableton Live which has none of those circumvoluted fiddles.

You just put your files wherever you want, have Live locating them once and you are done! That said, thank you very much for the tips and comments. Last edited by Elevteros; 31st October at AM..

Just got crazier – that’s it Logic, I’ve had it! Well here I am i the studio to continue downloading content, starting with about 1. Absolute madness, or is there a work around? Doesn’t seem to be. Last edited by Elevteros; 31st October at PM.. Thank you! I did know about Symlinks, have it and tried it but it is rather dodgy and Logic didn’t like that one bit, no matter what the Youtube videos show!

I am still puzzled by the I guess Apple just wants us to get large expensive SDDs. The symbolic link seems interesting. HD is formatted HFS. And yes, Apple would like us to sell at least one kidney to buy their pro stuff nowadays Leaving my Greek studio in a few days so this will now have to wait here for the winter.

In Brussels I use a laptop so I’ll try there the suggested method in a week. Very grateful for your inputs and help you are actually the only one who bothered.
